Principal's Message

Welcome to Mary Honeywell Elementary School!

At MHES we thank the Algonquin Anishinaabe People, and respectfully acknowledge that our learning, playing, and growing takes place on their unceded, and unsurrendered territory, and we recognize their enduring presence on this land.

It is a pleasure and honour to continue my journey of learning as the principal of  MHES for the 2023-2024 school year. My educational career has spanned 33 years as a teacher, instructional coach and administrator. Through my many experiences working with and alongside students, staff & communities I have come to know that learning requires a team approach and it is strong relationships and connections that result in the richest learning. Through our rich learning opportunities it is my hope that we will build strong relationships together and a sense of belonging where each student feels included, safe to take risks in learning, and will gain the knowledge and skills to become independent, lifelong learners.

MHES is a dual track K-6 site. Our programs include English, Early French Immersion (EFI) &  Autism. All together our student population is approximately 550 students. We are incredibly proud of the diverse backgrounds and experiences our students and staff have to offer one another. Our MHES staff comprises principal, vice-principal, teachers, EAs, ECEs, a Library Technician, Office Administrator, Office Assistant, & Custodial staff. Together with  dedicated community volunteers & OCDSB support staff we seek to provide a safe, nurturing and supportive learning environment for all students.

At MHES, we recognize that all students and staff have their own lived experiences and we seek to celebrate what makes each of us uniquely human. Students are encouraged to engage in conversation about student life at MHES and share input into, and participate in, events at our school. Throughout the school year, students are encouraged to engage in clubs, sports and extracurricular activities to promote their social and emotional well-being.

We have an active School Council who partners with MHES to support student initiatives and implementation of learning opportunities and community connections. Please join us on the 2nd Thursday of the month where you can learn more about lunch programs, community events & fundraisers to support student learning. We value the diversity of our community voices and perspectives and look forward to hearing from you.

Each day, we seek to promote student achievement and well-being through the provision of a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for all learners. We support students on their unique learning journeys as they prepare for life beyond elementary school. The staff at MHES recognize that the path to each child’s future is unique and we seek to support his/her/their growth and life goals by providing collaborative and innovative learning opportunities. Students are provided with daily opportunities to collaborate with their peers, think critically about the world around them and challenge their current thinking.

At Mary Honeywell staff, students, families, professionals and community members work together to support students and their families in their learning journey. We welcome your questions and partnerships as we journey through learning during 2023-24.

On behalf of MHES staff, I can say that we are eager and excited to work with you to support your child’s learning and well-being!

Sincerely, your partner in your child’s education,

Principal Wanda Mills-Boone
